The Decisive Power of the Hands

For over 10,000 years, humans have used mobile hand spindles to transform loose fibers into threads, yarns, and twines. It was only about 250 years ago that machines took over this process, distancing us from the origins of our clothing. In my workshops, we reclaim this skill. We come to understand that a smooth, fine thread is no coincidence—it is the result of focus, rhythm, and the decisive power of the hands.

From spinning to surface: process over product

It is important to me that the journey does not end with the finished yarn, as a thread is always the beginning of something greater. Therefore, I encourage my participants to immediately continue working with their unique, hand-spun creations. My personal focus lies in weaving, a practice that is enthusiastically embraced within the course setting.
A central concern of mine is to remove the pressure of achieving a "perfect" end result. A finished, functional garment does not have to emerge immediately; instead, I invite participants to engage in a process that is entirely open-ended.

In this protected artistic space, failure and experimentation are explicitly welcomed. The results may be pattern samples or haptic sketches that explore material and technique. In this way, a textile archive gradually grows, functioning as a documentation of one’s own learning steps. This collection of experiences and textures may eventually lead to something functional—but it doesn’t have to. The true value lies in the insight gained through free creation. Whether weaving, knitting, crocheting, or free-forming: every technique is welcome as a way to trace the cycle of creation without the pressure of efficiency.

Systematic knowledge sharing: VHS Hamburg

The Adult Education Centre (Volkshochschule) Hamburg is currently an important partner for me as a hub for lifelong learning. This cooperation provides the ideal framework to focus entirely on teaching. Since 2024, vibrant communities have emerged here: over the course of several sessions, participants get to know each other, offering mutual advice and inspiration.

Spinning and weaving become a social glue—a space for exchange where strangers grow into a community that empowers one another in their sense of self-efficacy. Occasionally, the workshop program is also hosted by prestigious institutions such as the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MK&G) or the Altona Museum.

My approach: empowerment & joy of play

I lead my groups with a positive spirit and a sense of playful ease. I make complex textile relationships tangible without them feeling heavy or overwhelming. My goal is to empower participants and strengthen their sense of self-efficacy. They experience firsthand the ability to take things into their own hands, developing a deep awareness of the immense effort and resources required for a single garment. We discuss origins, ethics, and sustainability—not as abstract theories, but as a direct consequence of our own actions and by retracing the journey from raw material to finished surface.

Looking ahead: team events, seep work & artistic interventions

While teaching at institutions forms my solid foundation, I am currently opening my work to the corporate context. I am developing specialized formats for teams—particularly those in highly digitized environments seeking a haptic counterpoint. Working with the spindle and focusing on the construction of textiles is far more than a simple team event; it is an artistic intervention for focus, a healthy culture of trial and error, and Deep Work.
Are you interested in becoming a pilot partner to develop a tailored format for your team? I welcome inquiries from companies eager to explore unconventional paths in personnel development and community building.
