let’s spin!2025
On June 21–22, 2025, the workshop 'Let’s Spin!' took place at HyCP Veddel Space in Hamburg as part of India Week 2025, led by artist Sachidananda KJ from Mysore, India. For two days, everything revolved around the art of hand-spinning cotton fibers with the Charkha—a symbol of empowerment, slowing down, and rethinking our relationship with textiles.
The group was diverse, including designers, activists, museum professionals, a theater costume maker, and many more.
A highlight was the spontaneous action initiated by the group: spinning on the Mahatma Gandhi Bridge in front of the Elbphilharmonie, which drew significant attention.
The workshop concluded with an exhibition at the HyCP Veddel Space, showcasing the hand-spun threads alongside a documentation of the process.
'Let’s Spin!' impressively demonstrated the level of interest already present in Hamburg—participants were inquiring about a follow-up even before the workshop had concluded. For everyone involved, the project opened up new connections and perspectives.
A project that spins threads between Hamburg and India—one that has only just begun and is eager to be continued!
Without the generous support and commitment of the HyCP veddel space team and the Senatskanzlei Hamburg,
this project would not have been possible - a big thank you!
The project was supported by the Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg and the Bezirksamt Hamburg-Mitte.
