SPINNING AS A STATEMENT ?

On June 21–22, 2025, the workshop Let’s Spin! with Mysore (India) based artist Sachidananda KJ took place at HyCP veddel space / Hamburg during the India Week 2025. For two days, everything revolved around the art of hand spinning cotton fibres with the Charkha – a symbol of empowerment, slowing down, and rethinking our relationship to textiles.

The group was diverse: designers, activists, a museum professional, a theater costume maker, and more. A highlight was the spontaneous action on the Mahatma Gandhi Bridge in front of the Elbphilharmonie, where we spun publicly with the Charkhas and drew a lot of attention.

The workshop concluded with an exhibition at the HyCP Veddel Space, showing spun threads and documentation of the process.
Let’s Spin! demonstrated how strong the interest in Hamburg already is – participants were asking about follow-ups before the workshop had even ended. For all participants it was opening new connections and perspectives.

A project that spins threads between Hamburg and India – and is only just beginning that wants to be continued!

Without the generous support and commitment of the HyCP veddel space team and the Senatskanzlei Hamburg,
this project would not have been possible - a big thank you!

The project was supported by the Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg and the Bezirksamt Hamburg-Mitte.
